Malibu’s Hidden Seafood Gem
When you think of Malibu, what comes to mind?
The Pacific ocean?
Surfing?
Celebrity homes with views of the Pacific ocean and surfers?
All of that is true, but Malibu also has a very cool, laid-back vibe.
So if you’re looking for a great ocean view with that one-of-a-kind California hip vibe, and good food, then you want to head to Neptune’s Net.
Neptune’s Net is right on Pacific Coast Highway (what the locals call PCH).
There’s parking for cars, and it’s a popular hang-out for motorcyclists.
They have a huge, outdoor patio with incredible views of the ocean.
Okay, it’s views of PCH, then the cars parked on the other side of PCH, and then the ocean. But when you have a view of the ocean like this, it’s easy to ignore all the other distractions.
And while the views will bring you to Neptune’s Net, it’s the food that will keep you coming back.
Neptune’s Net is first-come, first-serve, no reservations, no fuss kind of place.
You pick up your drinks from the beer/soft drink cases, like you would at a 7-11. Then get in line, place your order, and grab a seat.
If all the seats outside are taken, then there are a few tables & booths inside.
While the inside view can’t compare with the outside, it’s nicely done.
There’s a fisherman’s net that separates the drink cases (and the food line) from the dining area, The nets have rubber fish and merch hanging up.
The merch they sell includes the normal things – t-shirts, mugs, hats.
And the not-so-normal – crab flip-flops.
Maybe you’re into crab flip-flops – no judgment!
There’s also a wall of magazine articles & accolades they’ve received over the years.
But the star is the food.
Neptune’s Net is fried seafood at its finest.
I got the triple combo of fried fish, fried shrimp, and a crab cake. I substituted regular fries with sweet potato fries, and I added a ranch dip to the order.
Grab your own plastic utensils, napkins, fresh lemons, hot sauce (if that’s your thing), and your order will likely be ready.
Can you say yum? I think all you’ll be able to manage is “Mmmmm,” because your mouth will be full.
I’d insert a joke about “see-food” here, but we’re not 7!
The meal is served in cardboard containers – remember I said this was laid-back? It’s laid-back and casual.
The fried fish was battered, crispy and hot! The crab cake was layered and flavorful. The shrimp was really good as well, but (imo), it needed a little salt. Again, grab your own salt and stop complaining!
One of their specialities that I did not get to try is their clam chowder in a bread bowl. I have heard amazing reviews on this, so it’s at the top my list for the next time I’m there.
If you’re in southern California and you’re looking for that local experience, then head to Neptune’s Net, and experience Malibu in all its fried seafood, laid-back, Pacific ocean glory!
